Galle
Legend has it that Galle was the Tarshish of the Old Testament where Salomon’s ships were loaded with jewels and spices. A little over an hour’s drive along the coast will bring you to the southern capitol of Sri Lanka. The old Dutch fort with architecture going back to the 17th century is one of the main tourist attractions in this port city.
Kandy
The capital of Ceylon till 1796 Kandy is a bustling city nestled in a valley 2000 ft. above sea level. This city which belongs to the cultural triangle houses the Temple of the Sacred Tooth the holiest site for the majority Sinhalese Buddhists in the country. A visit to the beautifully landscaped Peradeniya Botanical Gardens just before entering Kandy is a must for any lover of flora and fauna.
The mountain fortress of Sigiriya
Built on a 200 m monolithic rock this surely is a wonder in the world. The paintings of the Sigiriya damsels have been preserved for over 2000 years. The view from the top of the rock is breathtaking indeed.
Colombo
The multi faceted generously laid out capital of Sri Lanka is the economic center of the country. In addition to the National Museum, the Parliament too is located in the suburbs. But mostly, Colombo is famous with tourists for shopping tours.
